Individuals with a vision disability can now navigate DVR’s Denver Metro Field Office with the support of GoodMaps Explore

(DENVER) – In honor of Wayfinding Month, the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment’s (CDLE) Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) is announcing its inclusion in a new app to help those who are blind or have low vision effectively and independently navigate its Denver Metro Field Office. Visitors and staff can now download GoodMaps Explore, an accessible wayfinding app, onto their Apple or Android mobile devices for free.

According to the 2021 American Community Survey, more than 59,000 Coloradans have a vision disability.  Many of these individuals rely on others to help them find their way when they enter buildings. The first step in adding CDLE’s office to GoodMaps Explore was to create an accurate map and room directory of the indoor spaces. Next, that information was fused to create detailed routes to make navigating a breeze.

GoodMaps Explore was specifically designed to be accessible for people who are blind or have low vision but also provides navigation assistance to all. This simple and intuitive app can provide a list of points of interest (POIs), narrate what is nearby, and give detailed routing assistance.  This highly accurate indoor navigation is powered by revolutionary camera-based positioning and LiDAR mapping technology.

“We want everyone who works for us and who visits our office to feel welcome,” said Kristin Corash, DVR Division Director. “This technology is a way for us to embrace inclusivity and equity through ensuring that all who visit us are able to easily and independently navigate our spaces.”

About GoodMaps

GoodMaps, based in Louisville, KY, was spun-off from the American Printing House for the Blind (APH) in early 2019 with the mission: to make a leap in the quality and scale of accessible navigation. Realizing that this mission of accessible navigation was limited by the lack of indoor digital mapping, the GoodMaps platform and company were born. The GoodMaps mission is to improve the accessibility, safety, and inclusivity of indoor spaces. We do this by creating and maintaining accurate digital maps, providing revolutionary indoor positioning technology, and delivering a simple and intuitive wayfinding experience to all users.
