(DENVER) - Governor Jared Polis has proclaimed June to be Workplace Safety Month in Colorado. While June is broadly recognized as National Safety Month, the Governor’s proclamation brings special attention to the importance of maintaining workplace safety standards and practices that protect Colorado’s workers.
The National Safety Council estimated the total cost of workplace injuries in 2023 to be $176.5 billion. This number does not account for the mental, emotional and physical toll on injured workers and their families. In Colorado this past year, there were 32,617 workers’ compensation claims reported to the Division of Workers’ Compensation’s (DOWC), with 98 involving fatalities. These realities emphasize the importance of workplace safety programs, training, and policies that protect employees.
Within the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment (CDLE), the DOWC's Premium Cost Containment (PCC) Program supports and rewards employers that demonstrate an exceptional commitment to preventing injuries and containing costs. Prioritizing workplace safety can also support a positive work environment, help attract and retain talent and become a competitive advantage. PCC-certified employers also receive up to a 10% discount on their workers’ compensation insurance premiums.
This year, the DOWC is recognizing PCC-certified employers in the recreation and tourism industries. These employers represent a key segment of the Colorado economy and serve as ambassadors of our state’s unique culture and adventurous spirit. They work to create unforgettable Colorado memories for locals and international visitors alike. The 2025 Workplace Safety Month honorees are:
- Denver Adventures
- Denver Botanic Gardens
- Adaptive Adventures
- Denver Zoo Conservation Alliance
- Echo Canyon River Expeditions
- Denver Art Museum
- Mild to Wild Rafting
The DOWC will recognize the honorees above by promoting workplace safety across CDLE’s social media channels through the month of June.
Workers’ compensation provides medical care and wage benefits for injured workers and is required for all employers with employees operating in Colorado. Failure to carry this insurance can leave employers responsible for the full cost of an uninsured injury in addition to fines. The DOWC is available to support both employers and workers. If you have any questions about workers’ compensation requirements, how to file a claim or how to become PCC-certified, please call the DOWC Customer Service team at 303-318-8700.
